bcb723 Not to breathlessly fanboy over this, but "Stoic" is definitely one of the better doomy-ish things I've heard so far this year. Crust craft some distinctive blackened doom sludge with a strong sense of melody that checks all the right boxes for me. Huge. Favorite track: Watching Emptiness.

In the world ruled by fears and false values it ain’t easy to find your own way. Most of us accept clichés prepared by society and live a life drifting down the bitten track. Many a man walk by a dark scary cave and turn away unable to endure its profound depth, perilous traps and pit falls. But a stoic enters it as at the end of the cave burns a torch of truth and wisdom. And only breaking through a myriad of misfortunes lurking there in darkness, he can reach that torch.

" The band name might imply a crustcore band, but this three-piece from Veliky Novgorod, a middle-sized town lying on the highway between Saint Petersburg and Moscow, has rather chosen a blackened sludge metal sound as their raison d’être. Founded only back in 2014, Stoic is already their third longplayer, standing next to a row of five EPs, two singles and one live album.

Stoicism is also the leitmotif of their new album, meaning that this is the only reasonable attitude to face this current world of fears and false values. The band has accumulated eight new songs that prove that the sludge metal genre can actually be more diverse than you would have expected. Take for instance the opener and title track which starts like a brutal old school death thrash piece before all of a sudden the rhythm goes to half the speed, adding tons of groove for a killer sludge verse that draws parallels to Type O Negative’s first album, before it all speeds up again. At not even five minutes, this is the band’s shortest regular track. The following Watching Emptiness is at ten minutes the longest song, with funeral doom and post metal elements making this a wonderful exercise in melancholy. Lots of effects during the slow parts help give the song a haunting atmosphere. Only the last two minutes lose themselves in something like a moody outro, yet not adding much to the song itself. A Blind Man In Darkness once again combines death thrash moments with powerful sludge doom parts, and while it’s here where Crust excel, it’s also their fine sense for variety which makes Stoic a highly entertaining album. The first half ends with the one minute short Willow Forest, a sweet melody played on acoustic guitar.

The second half begins with Plague, a highly atmospheric sludge doom metal song which at times reminds me of early My Dying Bride minus the violin. Darkness Becomes Us and Anhedonia follow in those footsteps, and while on the surface it may seem as if Crust are following always a similar modus operandi, it is not as simple as that. You never know when they insert a break that steers the song into a whole different direction. The album ends with the psychedelically flavoured instrumental Desert, and before you know it, Stoic has come to an end after three quarters of an hour.

If you like your sludge metal augmented by doom, black, death, thrash and post metal elements, you will be delighted by Crust and their third album Stoic. It’s been produced impeccably, and has all it takes to arouse the interest of every self-inspecting fan of extreme slomo metal with the occasional outburst of speed."

Mixing the best of what death, black and doom metal has to offer, Crust use more than just dark riffs to create something truly heavy.

The vocals pinpoint the anger and almost uneasy tone to this record, there's a sense of brutality but it's highlighted by the tense atmosphere created beneath.

Each track tells its own tale, which is backed up by the ever-changing pace and overall feel as the record continues on. The tracks range from black metal fast pace, to hollow doom tracks that enable your mind to fill out the dark emptiness beneath the slow build.

From the fast tremolo picking that gives off that black metal feel, to the Paradise Lost gothic doom feel in the slower tracks - Crust were able to nail every facet in Stoic and leave no stone unturned.

The record closes with a psychadelic outro that distinguishes the exact nature of this record, it's dark and somber, but there's a sense of heavy atmosphere here. Crust have enabled themselves to find a space between the brutal side of death metal, and the gloomy side of doom - and position themselves perfectly within the two states and find a fantastic way to explore the entire realm

"Have you ever stared into the abyss and asked yourself "What would Lucius Annaeus Seneca do?" or have ever felt like Epicurus might have been right after all? Well, I can relate. Modern society has a way of making stoicism very attractive again. Surrounded by darkness, false beliefs, and chaos, Russian band Crust has faced the ancient paradigm and is hence leading their audience through thick darkness towards the light of wisdom.

Contrarily to what the band name might make assume, Crust play a mix of Sludge, Doom, Black, and Post Metal. They create opulent apocalyptic soundscapes with the potential to raise an army of the undead. Heaving Doom and Post Metal rhythm march through the swampy depths of Sludge while Black Metal staccati blow like blizzards. Crust play the soundtrack of a landscape that is freezing, burning and drowning simultaneously. This is not your regular eschaton - this is full armageddon. And if this apocalyptic theme is meant to be the foundation of a planetary rebirth, then not a single soul will witness it.

Alongside, Thronehammer's "Incantation Rites", this might be one of the darkest, most brachial, and yet stunning apocalyptic narrative of (at least) 2021. Crust's "Stoic" is an impressive piece of art combining at least 666 shades of black. The band is dragging their audience into a deep abyss where time, space, and life have no meaning. What a powerful release! I am somewhat reminded of Germany's Totenmond."

"For me, today is April 2nd, which means today is the day the serious heavy metal punishers Crust from Russia have released their newest album, “Stoic”, which I've been waiting for. These guys don't give a fuck about your petty little eardrums or feelings and deliver an amazing performance on this record. It travels from earth-splitting doom to blast beats and claustrophobic atmospheres. Since I’m a major fan of their previous albums, I couldn't help myself and decided to do a full typing as I listen album review front to back. Here we go.

The opening track, “Stoic”, blasts off immediately with moderately paced blast beats and tremolo picked guitars reminding me of something from an MGLA album. Right off the bat, I immediately thought, “Holy fuck! They’re going straight black metal here!" But then here comes the slow, crawling doom riff with Arthur's amazingly brutal and emotional vocals. The way his voice sounds just twists your guts as every single word is delivered with pure internal pain. The song cascades back and forth from the high-paced opening riff, to crushing doom with choking atmospheres until the songs demise. These guys are firing 10 out of 10 with their atmospheres.

The next song, “Watching Emptiness”, has an emotional feeling that pushes misery into your chest, and then rips it apart when the power of the riff increases and the vocals kick in. Throughout the soundscape looms delayed, reverberating guitars in the background, causing your face to drop, and I find myself feeling a strong sense of pain that is being portrayed here. It's clear on this track that these guys haven't pigeonholed themselves into a style. The song freely flows in and out of all sorts of different landscapes, yet still trudging along all the way until the song closes. At this point, I purchased the album, to add to the rest of my Crust albums.

“A Blind Man in Darkness” enters as I'm already in an emotional rage from the last song, and the song placement is perfect. Its more aggressive approach pushes you further into a lust for hate. Blast beats and fast-picked guitars lead you to a point where you need a moment to rest, and they do just that, as they slow it down with some more open, airy space, soon to be followed by punishing chugged riffs and heart-tearing vocals. Crust's riff transitions are perfectly crafted, waxing and waning in and out of pure punishment, and paranoid atmosphere, always leading up to something. Beginning, ascent, and climax.

The next piece is a well-placed break with instrumental acoustic segue called “Willow Forest”, which helps to transfer over to the next song. They keep it short, lasting under a minute.

The next song, “Plague”, comes in slow and miserable, spewing forth rancid vocals and a slow, vile guitar riff that you know is going to utterly get crushed when the next part comes in. The vocals and drums break for a few bars, and then here it comes. Blasts and a brooding atmosphere rip through you until broken up by a clunky and heavy Mastodon-esque riff that gets your head banging, and you understand that this is the riff PLAGUE! It is coming, or it's already here. The song broods on until finally releasing itself and relaxes with soaring lead guitar that takes you to the end.

“Darkness Becomes Us” picks up where the last song left off. Claustrophobia in the background of a riff dragged out from below a graveyard. The song keeps building and is slashed down by another fast tremolo part much in the style of old atmospheric black metal. The progression blisters on building momentum, when finally broken by a hard-hitting, ascending riff and further broken by an open airy section that has some really obscure spoken word section. Kind of like the song “O Father O Satan O Sun” by Behemoth except in a much dirtier, much crustier fashion. Finally at the end of the song, Arthur's brutal vocals kick back in as he screams with terrible pain “Darkness” over and over until the song comes to its end.

The next track, “Anhedonia”, enters. So, I'm just going to start with this. For those who have never gone through depression, “Anhedonia” is a symptom of depression. It is what makes you unable to see the positive and makes you completely unable to feel happiness... It is a serious life-destroying feeling, and it isn't a joke. Anyway, with that out of the way, the song itself starts off with very obscure and waving “clean” vocals - if you can call them clean, making an awkward and uncomfortable feeling. Once that settles in, in typical Crust fashion, they change gears to the fastest feeling part on the album. Blasts and flaming fast guitars mixed with full bore brutal vocals trample you until the next riff comes. It's a really strange long guitar-bending technique that always sounds really sinister, and they place it in there perfectly. After another run with the wavering vocals, an airy atmosphere kicks in that is led by the drums with some pounding toms and a choked back EQ sounding solo that ends the song. At this point, I was totally flattened by pure crushing misery, and amazing atmospheric black metal-style riffing. But the album isn't done yet.

“Desert”… This is kind of like a bonus track. On this track, they showcase kind of what the whole album was doing in the background. The track is an instrumental that is slow, trudging, and groove-laden with delayed atmospheric riffage and a lead guitar travelling around in a psychedelic-type fashion, until the album comes to a finish. Well, that was one hell of an awesome ride. Crust really went with a lot more of an atmospheric black metal kind of approach on this album, and I was fuckin’ digging it! I feel like this album was a step towards something new yet still familiar, so it's totally awesome and broadens their song catalogue's diversity. This album is going to be spun many times by me for sure, just as the rest of their discography, which is starting to stack up! This was only my first listen, but I would put this in my top 10 album of 2021 so far! Brutal, Angry, and Beautiful all at the same time. Long live Crust!

"Sometimes, if you’re really lucky, an artist will produce an album which seems like it was tailor-made just for you.

Every song strikes a chord, every track touches a nerve, and every piece of the puzzle just fits so perfectly that you’d think the band was actively capable of peering directly into your brain.

It’s always exciting, especially when the band in question has a deeper discography for you to dig into too, as was the case when I stumbled across the new album from Russia’s own Blackened Sludgelords Crust recently, as not only did I instantly fall head over heels in love with the group’s hypnotically grim and humongously groove-laden sound, I was also compelled to go and pick up their entire physical back-catalogue (along with their entire digital discography) as part of last week’s #BandcampFriday.

And while I originally intended to save writing about these guys until the end of the month (as part of the next edition of The Synn Report) I quickly realised I couldn’t wait that long to lay out just why Stoic has become one of my favourite albums of the year so far.

Having familiarised myself with the band’s previous works and their ongoing evolution, it’s clear that Stoic is by far their best work yet, with a meatier, more menacing Black Metal component and a darker, even doomier, side to it, than anything they’ve done before.

In a lot of ways it actually reminds me of last year’s crushing debut album, The Grief That Feeds the Night, from Germany’s Hvrt (which was, and is still, one of my favourite records of 2020), delivering a similar blend of sick, sludge-soaked grooves and blistering blackened fury.

The difference is that whereas their German brethren also incorporated a coruscating core of ripping Swe-Death riffage into their sound, Crust put an even greater emphasis on both the Black Metal and Doom aspects – think Goatwhore, Ruins, and The Howling Wind mixed with a lethal dose of Celtic Frost, Grief, and EyeHateGod – with the latter set of influences/elements in particular featuring even more prominently this time around.

With a heavier, harsher, and even more intense sound than either of the band’s previous albums, Stoic definitely/defiantly doesn’t pull any punches or offer any quarter – even during its slower, more atmospheric moments there’s still an oppressive, claustrophobia-inducing aura of impending doom casting a pall over the entire record – nor does it leave much room for light, or hope, or joy.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a one-note affair by any means. In fact it’s the demonically dynamic nature of the record which, ultimately, is one of the big reasons I keep coming back to it.

Opening with the bone-rattling blasts, bile-spewing vocals, and whirling dervish tremolo guitars of the title-track – which, over the course of just under five minutes transitions from a breakneck gallop to a soul-crushing slog to a tooth-grinding groove, and back again – the album constantly keeps you on your toes (while retaining a consistently morbid and menacing tone) as it moves from the suffocating atmosphere and sinister melody of “Watching Emptiness” to the grim grooves and grimy riffs of “A Blind Man In Darkness” to (after a brief but welcome pause for breath during “Willow Forest”) the pitch-black doom-laden dirge of “Plague”.

This constantly shifting approach – punishing passages of relentless rhythmic momentum interspersed with sudden jolts of abrasive acceleration and/or whiplash-inducing bouts of slithering slow-motion sludgery – means you never know quite when the band are going to switch things up, but you’re always confident they’re going to pick just the right moment to do so.

“Darkness Becomes Us”, for example, is seven-minutes-and-forty-two-seconds of doom ‘n’ gloom, grit and grime, which proves that Crust know exactly how long they need to let their music simmer and breathe to allow it to achieve its full potential, while “Anhedonia” is a prime specimen of dense, doom-laden riffage and asphyxiating ambience which demonstrates how well the band are able to balance all the various elements of their sound (while also adding just the right amount of moody melody) without shortchanging any of them in the process.

Concluding with the desolate, almost hallucinogenic, instrumental strains of “Desert”, Stoic proves that sometimes the biggest and best musical surprises come when you least expect them, so it’s important to always keep your eyes, and your ears, open, as otherwise you might just miss out on something truly fantastic!"

"Espectacular a entrada deste álbum dos Crust. A sonoridade, principalmente a distorção de guitarra e a voz, tem tanta gravilha que até parece que estamos perante um camião de alcatrão prestes a despejar em cima de nós e o equilíbrio entre o death e o doom está atingido de uma forma impressionante. O doom é a linguagem que mais se expressa aqui mas há sempre o peso do death metal dá o ar de sua graça de vez em quando, sempre com resultados intensos. Outro elemento preponderante é a atmosfera criada. Este é um ambiente muito próprio e que ajuda a que se tenha uma experiência única ao ouvir este álbum de seguida – é esse o intuito do álbum, certo? Por muito que a facilidade das playlists nos tenham feito esquecer isso. Estes russos têm aqui trabalho memorável, sem dúvida um dos grandes de 2021 definitivamente.

"On the last album from this long-running Russian crew, the band operates at high quality in a blending of metal styles. Influences from black and death metal can be heard creeping into the base, which is largely a mix of doom and sludge. Unsurprisingly, the music is incredibly moody, and capable of shifting from aggression to withdrawn brooding on a dime.

Leading with the title track, the band establishes their MO in clear terms, and expands on it in intriguing ways through the album's remainder. From the melodic atmospherics of “Watching Emptiness” to the acoustic interlude of “Willow Forest”, threads of drone in “A Blind Man in Darkness”, and the sample/scream interplay of “Darkness Becomes Us”, Crust show themselves to be well-versed in ways of keeping the heavy music engaging and varied.

The production is well-suited to their work, letting the bass end swell into an encompassing presence, while the higher register has an interesting ceiling in the mix, providing the guitars and cymbals with a touch of compression. The gentler parts of the song-writing are integrated in natural ways, letting the band fade from one harsher section to another while keeping it impactful, and when they're in hard gear, it comes off as consistently genuine and earnestly delivered. Though it can be taken as just a wash of dark metal, there's more than enough small details worked into the song-writing to reward careful listening as well. Excellent from start to finish.

Een paar post-metal elementen zitten er zeker ook in, zeker in de slottrack. Naar eigen zeggen trekken Crust zich van stilistische grenzen geen bal aan. Bij momenten klinken Crust al bij al vrij melodieus, in elk geval een pak melodieuzer dan je van een crustband zou verwachten.

Crust, opgericht in 2014, zijn een trio in de bezetting gitarist, zanger/bassist en drummer. De lyrics zijn in het Engels en de vocalist smeert op dit nieuwe album zijn vettig rochelende grunt uit over zes van de acht composities.

“Stoic” (8 tracks, 48 minuten) is het derde album van Crust en werd genoemd naar de filosofische leer van het Stoïcisme uit het Oude Griekenland. De band ziet een stoïcijnse houding als de enige manier om te overleven in deze wereld die wordt geregeerd door angsten en valse waarden.

Het album opent met “Stoic”, het indrukwekkende titelnummer dat je al van bij de eerste tonen omverblaast. De track wisselt snelle instrumentale stukken af met tragere vocale stukken. “Watching Emptiness” leunt wat meer aan bij doom metal met zijn trage slepende stukken, afgewisseld met snellere vocale. Het nummer bevat naar het einde toe een instrumentaal stuk met een heel knappe melodie.

“A Blind Man In Darkness” is een monsterlijke track die het beste van blackened doom/death en sludge in zich verenigt met meerdere tempowisselingen, knappe instrumentale stukken en indrukwekkend gegrunt. Een grunt die met wat moeite nog wel best verstaanbaar is eigenlijk, al neem je er misschien toch best de lyrics bij (ze staan mooi afgedrukt in het 6-panel digipak). Dan volgt met “Willow Forest” een heel mooi, kort en stemmig akoestisch gitaarstukje als rustpunt halverwege het album, alvorens de hel weer losbarst. Het is wat folky zoals Led Zeppelins “Black Mountain Side”.

Het stikdonkere, morbide “Plague” is vervolgens mijn absolute favoriet. Het nummer gaat op het eerste zicht over de zwarte dood die in de middeleeuwen Europa teisterde. Maar als je wat dieper graaft in de lyrics gaat het eigenlijk eerder over een mentale pest, zoals corruptie en machtsmisbruik.

“Darkness Becomes Us” begint erg traag en doomy om dan een paar versnellingen hoger te schakelen. Er volgen nog een paar tempowisselingen en gruntstem wisselt af met gesproken tekst. De voorlaatste track ”Anhedonia” is een trage black/doomtrack, maar steeds met die vette sludgy twist. Slottrack “Desert” tenslotte klinkt als een instrumentaal post-metal nummer.

Het nieuwe album van deze Russen is een aanrader voor de doom/death/sludgemetal liefhebber."

"Peu connu en nos contrées, Crust est pourtant détenteur d’un sérieux palmarès discographique puisque la page qui lui est consacrée dans l’Encyclopaedia Metallum recense sept EPs et Singles, trois albums studio et un live. Pas mal, pour un groupe qui n’existe que depuis 7 ans !

Formé en 2014 à Veliki Novgorod (NDR : à plus ou moins 500 km au nord-ouest de Moscou), le trio décrit sa musique comme “une fusion de Black Metal, de Doom Metal avec quelques éléments de Post Metal et une forte base de Sludge”. J’avoue ne pas avoir pas étudié sa discographie de fond en comble (NDR : même si on peut aisément la découvrir en long et en large sur Bandcamp), mais en tout cas “Stoic“, le nouvel album, paru début avril sur le label russe NoNameRecordz, correspond parfaitement à cette description. On y retrouve un captivant maelström sonore, constitué d’atmosphères sombres et d’explosions de fureur créés à grand renfort de riffs Doom Metal plombés et d’accélérations Black Métalliques distordues. Les voix extrêmes, plus proches, à notre avis du Death que du Black ajoutent encore à la noirceur de l’ensemble. Quelques intermèdes acoustiques et quelques soli de guitares traités à l’aide d’effets sympathiques (Wah-Wah?) apportent une couleur quasi-psychédélique à l’ensemble.

Un album captivant de bout en bout. Pour moi, la plus belle découverte issue du fameux ‘colis russe’ de l’ami Philippe Thirionet. Chaudement recommandé !"

STOIC by Crust!
So, this is the latest album by the band Crust released in April of this year which features 8 tracks!
So, after careful listening to this album, I have to say there are a few things that are intriguing to me right off the bat.
I want to discuss the production because this is (I feel) a massive deal about this record as it feels as though the 8 tracks were carefully put into place where they should be and masterfully handled as the overall listening experience is one of heavy doom, despair and helplessness!
I love the pacing of this album too, as the band doesn’t find the need to rush the completion of this experience and that’s a quality not many bands use to their full advantage to fully incorporate the message or vibe they are trying to sonically convey to the listener.
Tracks for me that highlight this perfectly are shown in the second song ‘Watching Emptiness’ as listeners uncover this 10-minute track you can hear the patience and slow unveiling of the story provided by the band, they make sure each minute has its purpose there’s a menacing start, deeply rooted middle and fascinating end and throughout all these waves in some amazing Black/Doom Metal which is the next talking point: The music!
This album does a fantastic job at providing an interesting blend of Black Metal, Doom Metal and as the album hits its halfway point Sludge Metal is introduced as well.
What’s unique about this album is that the influences aren’t just ‘sprinkled’ on in microdoses to fit here and there but strongly incorporated track for track which is a move I really respect.
You can easily identify the various sub-genres on each track and they do each sound justice especially the Black Metal which I find their most consistent sound that is distributed on the album.
Over the 8 tracks and the sonic enhancement of all of my favourite metal sub-genres it’s easy to see why this is a new Bandcamp favourite! It’s got

"Formati nel 2014 ed originari di Veliky Novgorod, città situata tra San Pietroburgo e Mosca, i Crust giungono al loro quarto lavoro con un disco di… metal, per la precisione doom/black metal. Cosa potrebbe farci qui un disco di metal se comunque non possiamo in effetti definirlo progressivo? Diciamo, dunque, in termini di apertura mentale ed inclinazioni ad atmosfere quantomeno tetre e claustrofobiche, questo “Stoic” può offrire motivi di interesse nella sua decadenza gotica, nichilista e vagamente “cosmica”. Lo stoicismo, come da titolo, qui è interpretato e filtrato in chiave metal e truculenta, “Crust” non si dilunga in analisi filosofiche, per fortuna o purtroppo, è inteso come la più valida attitudine per affrontare una società sostanzialmente corrotta dominata dall’odio, testi quindi che riflettono disperazione e frustrazione, disfacimento morale ed umano… la prova vocale del bassista Arthur Filenko, ahinoi, è ovviamente eseguita con voce gutturale e carica di rabbia, come da tradizione “death”, quindi immagino difficile da reggere per molti non abituati a frequentare territori metal. In effetti nel genere questo disco suona come un interessante ibrido che riesce ad amalgamare l’aggressione sonora più abrasiva con momenti di nera malinconia e depressione crepuscolare. C’è l’ormai immancabile filtro post metal-rock in certe situazioni più rumoristiche ed atmosferiche per dare un tocco intellettuale ed autoriale, come c’è anche qualche tendenza a dare sporadicamente un groove vagamente stoner, senza mai fortunatamente eccedere e sfondare nella rievocazione vintage. A grandi linee si potrebbe pensare a questo “Stoic” come una sorta di incontro/scontro tra Celtic Frost, My Dying Bride, Red Harvest, Mastodon e black metal scandinavo. I pezzi tendenzialmente vanno sopra i cinque minuti e sono tutti ben strutturati ed approfonditi, i Crust non lesinano ad esprimere la loro estetica del malessere attraverso i colpi di riff cadenzati e sepolcrali del chitarrista Vlad Tatarsky, bellicosi assalti frontali alla batteria di Igor Prokofiev ed espansioni sonore di psichedelia malata e noise-dark ambient. Nel complesso quindi un disco abbastanza riuscito e dinamico che ricalca con buon artistico tutti i classici stereotipi del genere."

Just as their name suggests, Crust have an impressively powerful sound, deep and foot-crunchingly gritty especially when their riffs start speeding up and cutting short into jagged blocks of concrete-slab sludge doom texture. Appropriately as well, given that this is the Russian trio's third album which the musicians recorded during lockdown conditions, "Stoic" proposes that in times of extreme hardship and stress, when situations we have long taken for granted are upturned and the future is uncertain, we must stay true to our values and the path we have taken, and persist until we have achieved wisdom, truth and enlightenment no matter how dark our path is and how many fall by the way.

The album was recorded in April with an older line-up that featured ex-drummer Igor Prokofiev (since replaced by Roman Romanov) and stalwarts Vlad Tatarsky on guitars and Artur Filenko on vocals and bass. "Stoic" shoots out of its starting gates with speedy blackened death doom in its title track with Filenko gloating away in a horrible guttural rasping voice. The band settles in what I presume is more familiar slow-paced territory in "Watching Emptiness", a blackly sombre atmospheric BM / psychedelic doom song of machine-like background tremolo guitars, prowling bass, thumping drums and oily lead guitar that observes how, with the passage of time, things eventually die or erode and return to nothingness. The band then segues into "A Blind Man in Darkness", a more straightforward, steely and rhythmic melodic blackened doom song that might serve as a single release with its message urging belief in oneself and one's destination.

After the quiet mellow "Willow Forrest" interlude, consisting of solo acoustic guitar, the album goes into a cold doom-laden phase with "Plague" and "Darkness Becomes Us" where slow rhythmic passages of repeating riffs suddenly erupt into spurts of blast-beat aggression or howling lead guitar in the background shadows. The vocals become a bit cleaner if more anguished and tortured on "Darkness Becomes Us" as though even the Crust men themselves are starting to doubt their own message during this arduous part of the album. "Anhedonia" (the word refers to the inability to find pleasure or satisfaction in normally pleasurable activities) is a criticism of hedonistic consumerism in a mix of slow thumping atmospheric blackened doom and dark ambient psychedelia.

The most impressive and perhaps terrifying track on the album, the closer "Desert", is entirely instrumental, a dirge of sprawling blackened psychedelic doom that might serve as a back-handed commentary on the album's theme, a warning perhaps that even following your own path and values can end in nothingness - if that path and those values lack authenticity and are rooted in shallow ideals. The music sounds very much like a lone howl in an ever-stretching dark cosmos, ranging far and wide in search of light in spaces where suns have died and galaxies collapsed in black holes. When the album ends, listeners may find themselves in a state of cliff-hanging limbo: not a comfortable place to be in and for some people, not a great way to end an album. In the context of its themes though, I find the album's open-ended nature a fitting closure.

For an album that sticks closely to its fusion of melodic blackened death doom with ambient and psychedelic space elements, "Stoic" turns out varied enough that most songs have their own musical identity within the overall style and no two tracks are the same in their mix. The album's early half steer close to alternative mainstream atmospheric blackened doom while later tracks in their punishing endurance tests sort out the true sludge doom believers from the common herd. A clear if austere and unforgiving vision, a dark and expansive sound universe, good song-writing and consistent, restrained musicianship make this album a surprisingly enjoyable - if not soothing - listening experience."

La band originaria di Veliky Novgorod ci spara in faccia otto pezzi che dall'iniziale title track giungono alla conclusiva "Desert", attraversando le paludi fangose dello sludge, le inquietanti atmosfere doomish, il tutto senza disdegnare brutali scorribande post black e death. Eccovi presentato in poche righe quanto ritroverete durante l'ascolto di questo terzo lavoro dei russi Crust, intitolato 'Stoic'. Se l'opener è un connubio di un po' tutti i generi sopraccitati, la seconda "Watching Emptiness" ha un piglio decisamente più atmosferico e introspettivo, muovendosi nei paraggi di un death doom emozionale, in grado di richiamare i primi Paradise Lost, attraverso un sound cupo ma costantemente accattivante, nonostante gli oltre dieci minuti di durata (anche se gli ultimi due sono piuttosto inutili). Con "A Blind Man in Darkness" si torna a galoppare alla grande con un riffing più teso, articolato, a tratti anche decisamente più ostico da digerire, sebbene numerosi tentativi volti a rasserenare gli animi, con parti più atmosferiche. Per un ripristino delle funzioni cerebrali, arriva però l'acustica di "Willow Forest", un breve intermezzo in grado di metterci in pace col mondo. Da qui si riparte con la seconda parte del cd e un trittico formato da "Plague", "Darkness Becomes Us" e "Anhedonia" che sembrano restituirci una band più tonica ed ispirata tra le dirompenti e melodiche ritmiche post black della prima, il black dissonante della seconda (uno dei pezzi forti del disco) e il doomish black della terza (un altro brano davvero interessante), che ci accompagnerà fino al finale affidato alla strumentale e più pacata "Desert", un pezzo che per il suo ipnotico impianto ritmico, potrebbe addirittura evocare "Angel" dei Massive Attack. Alla fine 'Stoic' è un disco che lascia qualcosa dentro che mi ha spinto più volte ad un ascolto più attento dei Crust."

"Crust are firmly in the genre of contemporary doom and death metal and their album Stoic (NONAME666 752) certainly looks the part – black cover background, elaborate artwork redolent of death and decay, plus they have their own logo drawn more or less in a Black Metal style. Vlad Tatarsky plays guitar, Arthur Filenko the bassist also provides the usual screaming throaty vocal that is demanded of those who play in this mode…enjoying the grim and grandiose sound of this one which delivers the hoped-for sensations of lurching through concrete, but sometimes feel let down by the very conventional heavy-metal guitar solos which cut through the general churning racket and tend to ruin the mood. Plenty of oppressive themes in the song lyrics, referring to pain, death, madness, dreams, and the “pitch black darkness of delusions” on songs with titles such as ‘Plague’, ‘Anhedonia’, and ‘A Blind Man in Darkness’. Like many hardcore straight-edge types, Crust seem to have developed a very unforgiving stance as they express their terminal disappointment with the lamentable state of the human race, seeing everything as stark either-or choices. "There is no doubt that one of my favourite labels in Russia is No Name, and I was sorry to hear that Anton was imprisoned and fined for being at an anti-war rally. My thoughts are with all the innocents caught up in this as there is going be no positive for anyone, just a great deal of suffering. Back to the music, and to another powerful release from the label. This is the third album from Stoic, who hail from Veliky Novgorod and at the time featured Vlad Tatarsky (guitars), Arthur Filenko (bass, vocals, acoustic guitar) and drummer Igor Prokofiev, although he has since been replaced by Roman Romanov. Given the name of the group, one might have an idea what they sound like, but to be honest this feels far more like blackened sludge with heavy emphasis on atmosphere which moves them almost into doom territory at times.

Most of the bands I hear from No Name are either instrumental or perform in Russian, but Arthur provides his coarse vocals in English, and all the lyrics are included in the digipak, which is also black and dark with little in the way of light. The bass and drums are at the heart of everything here, providing a crunching solidity which the guitar goes along with, so they are mostly in perfect sync with little in the way of brightness but rather earth-shattering riffs alongside atmosphere which definitely evokes a far more black metal feel. It is worth stating how the band themselves describe the album, as it is something I really agree with, “In the world ruled by fears and false values it ain’t easy to find your own way. Most of us accept clichés prepared by society and live a life drifting down the bitten track. Many a man walk by a dark scary cave and turn away unable to endure its profound depth, perilous traps and pit falls. But a stoic enters it as at the end of the cave burns a torch of truth and wisdom. And only breaking through a myriad of misfortunes lurking there in darkness, he can reach that torch. Are you a stoic? Will you come in?”

Powerful stuff, just like the album.

"Somehow it all worked out so that I don't know many good bands from beyond the eastern border of our country. Perhaps the time has come to try to change things a bit and do some research on the representatives of the local scene - or at least that was the conclusion I came to after the last album of the Russian sludge band Crust. It fell into my hands a long time ago, but only now did I find time to check it out. Huge mistake.

The album entitled Stoic , released last year by Moscow's No Name Records (also known as Addicted Label ), is unfortunately not perfect. My main complaint concerns the production layer, specifically the drums, which I think should be a bit more expressive. At certain points, their more powerful sound would give the trio's music more fucking (for example, in Darkness Becomes Us or instrumental Desert ).

All the rest of the issues related to Stoic are honey to the ears of sludge fans and not only - in their music the band mixes the already mentioned sludge with doom, post metal and even black. We are treated to this genre mishmash practically all the time: from the aggressive, doom-black title track, through the multi-threaded Watching Emptiness , sludge crushing refrain of the great A Blind Man in Darkness , flirting with the Plague black, slightly leaning towards the doom Darkness Becomes Us and Anhedonia, to the already mentioned instrumental Desert , which turns into psychedelic regions . Cruston their third album they are unpredictable, and this unpredictability is one of the greatest strengths of their release last year. Bathed in gloomy - I would even dare to use the word "apocalyptic" - the atmosphere of Stoic is very intriguing, and although these are not particularly pleasant and evoking positive emotions, it is impossible to tear yourself away from it.

Much of this is due to the compositional skills of the trio, which are at an above-average level. The changes of motives and genre inspirations, although very frequent, do not at any point sound forced or devoid of any deeper meaning. Everything is perfectly balanced, the angry fragments mix with the more atmospheric ones in perfect proportions. Thanks to this harmony, in their own way, catchy melodies that harmonize with the overwhelming atmosphere of Stoic drill under the skull and stay there for a really long time.

Were it not for the sound of the drums, we would be dealing with an album that was bordering on perfection. This drawback, however, turns out to be only a slight scratch on the diamond that Crust released last year. I wholeheartedly recommend making up for this album, and by the way also the previous two - I'm going to do it myself soon. Especially that the fourth album of the Russians, entitled Wanderers , is to be released next month.

"Jakoś tak się wszystko ułożyło, że nie znam zbyt wielu dobrych zespołów wywodzących się zza wschodniej granicy naszego kraju. Być może nadchodzi czas, aby spróbować trochę zmienić ten stan rzeczy i troszkę poszperać w przedstawicielach tamtejszej sceny – a przynajmniej do takiego wniosku doszedłem po starciu z ostatnim albumem rosyjskiej sludge’owej formacji Crust. Wpadł on w moje ręce dość dawno, jednak dopiero teraz znalazłem czas, żeby go sprawdzić. Wielki błąd.

Wydany w ubiegłym roku przez moskiewskie No Name Records (znane też jako Addicted Label) krążek zatytułowany Stoic nie jest niestety idealny. Mój główny zarzut dotyczy warstwy produkcyjnej, a konkretnie bębnów, które powinny być, jak sądzę, nieco bardziej wyraziste. W pewnych momentach ich potężniejsze brzmienie nadałoby muzyce tria większego pieprznięcia (na przykład w Darkness Becomes Us czy instrumentalnym Desert).

Cała reszta kwestii związanych ze Stoic to miód na uszy fanów sludge’u i nie tylko – w swojej muzyce zespół miesza wspomniany już sludge z doomem, post metalem, a nawet blackiem. Tym gatunkowym miszmaszem jesteśmy raczeni praktycznie cały czas: od agresywnego, doomowo-blackowego utworu tytułowego, przez wielowątkowy Watching Emptiness, sludge’owo miażdżący refren świetnego A Blind Man in Darkness, flirtujące z blackiem Plague, skłaniające się nieco w stronę doomu Darkness Becomes Us i Anhedonię, aż po wspomniany już instrumentalny Desert, który skręca z kolei w psychodeliczne rejony. Crust na swoim trzecim albumie są nieprzewidywalni, a ta nieprzewidywalność to jeden z największych atutów ich zeszłorocznego wydawnictwa. Skąpany w posępnej – odważyłbym nawet użyć się słowa: „apokaliptycznej” – atmosferze Stoic wypada niezwykle intrygująco i pomimo że nie są to dźwięki należące do szczególnie przyjemnych i wywołujących pozytywne emocje, to nie sposób się od niego oderwać.

Spora w tym zasługa kompozycyjnych umiejętności tria, które stoją na zdecydowanie ponadprzeciętnym poziomie. Zmiany motywów i gatunkowych inspiracji, choć nader częste, w żadnym punkcie nie brzmią na wymuszone czy pozbawione głębszego sensu. Wszystko jest świetnie zbalansowane, wściekłe fragmenty mieszają się z tymi bardziej klimatycznymi w idealnych proporcjach. Dzięki tej harmonii na swój sposób chwytliwe i współgrające z przytłaczającym klimatem Stoic melodie wwiercają się pod czaszkę i pozostają tam na naprawdę długo.

Gdyby nie brzmienie perkusji, mielibyśmy do czynienia z albumem ocierającym się o doskonałość. Ten mankament okazuje się jednak tylko drobną rysą na diamencie, jaki Crust wydali w ubiegłym roku. Z całego serca polecam nadrobić ten krążek, a przy okazji i dwa poprzednie – sam zamierzam już wkrótce się tym zająć.
